GENERAL CODE OF CONDUCT POLICY
In conformity with Article 9/3 of the Constitution of Love In Action (LIA), this general code
of conduct policy is binding on all our members.
A) RESPECT FOR OTHERS
- We will respect all persons equally and without any distinction or discrimination based
on nationality, race, ethnicity, tribe, gender, religious beliefs, political opinions or
disability. - We will act fairly, honestly and tactfully, and treat people with dignity and respect.
- We will respect the national laws, international laws and local culture, traditions,
customs and practices that are in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
B) RESPECT FOR WORK ETHICS
- We will contribute to building a harmonious workplace based on team spirit, mutual
respect and understanding. - We will dress in a manner appropriate to the assignment and the cultural setting.
- We will not take part in any form of discrimination, harassment or physical, sexual or
verbal abuse, intimidation or exploitation, or in any other way infringe on the rights of
others. - We will maintain high standards of conduct, both personal and professional by striving
for high standards in our work, taking responsibility for our actions and not abusing our
position of power. - We will refrain from behaving in a way that undermines our ability to do our job or is
likely to harm anybody’s reputation. - We will ensure that our personal and professional performance is always based on a
non-racist, non-discriminatory, gender sensitive and environmental-friendly conduct. - We will neither support nor take part in any form of criminal, illegal, exploitative or
abusive activities including, for example child labour, paedophilia, forced prostitution,
trafficking of human beings, commodities and intoxicants. - We will never knowingly support, tolerate or encourage terrorism or the activities of
those who embrace terrorism. - We will not ask for or invite any kind of personal payment, service or favour from
others, especially beneficiaries in return for our help or support of any kind. - We will not be in possession of, nor profit from the sale of illegal goods or substances.
- We will not drink alcohol or use any other substances in a way that affects our ability
to do our job. - We will not accept bribes or significant gifts (except small tokens of appreciation
valued less than 30 US dollars that we will immediately notify to our line manager) from
governments, beneficiaries, donors, suppliers or others. - We will not carry weapons or put on military uniforms when on duty.
C) RESPECT FOR SEXUAL DECENCY
- We will not use our organisation’s computer or other equipment to view, download,
create or distribute inappropriate material such as pornography and paedophilia. - We are aware that sexual exploitation and abuse constitute acts of gross misconduct,
and are therefore grounds for termination of our membership in this organisation. - We will not engage in any sexual activity with persons under the ages of 18.
- We will not exchange money, goods or services for sex, including sexual favours or
other forms of humiliating, degrading or exploitative behaviour, and we are aware that
they are prohibited. - We will distance ourselves from all forms of sexual abuses including rape,
homosexuality and sexual harassment. - We will educate our staff on the respective sanctions placed on all sexual intercourse-
related crimes by the law.
D) RESPECT FOR THE VULNERABLE
- By taking into consideration the difficult experiences that victims of disasters have
faced and the disadvantaged position in which they may find themselves in relation to
those who hold power or influence over certain aspects of their lives, we will always seek
to care for and protect the rights of the most vulnerable, e.g. children in particular,
orphans and separated children, women, single parents, the elderly, disabled, chronically
sick and vulnerable minority groups. - We will not abuse the power and influence that we have by virtue of our position over
the lives and wellbeing of beneficiaries.
E) RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
- We will use due care, skills and foresight to minimize environmental harm, and comply
with environmental regulations and standards applicable to both our work and personal
behaviour to minimise environmental pollution and to contribute to the protection of the
environment. - We will avoid, minimize and manage the damage we cause to the environment and the
climate in line with the principle of “do no harm” on our beneficiaries who are often
heavily affected by climate change and environmental degradation, yet they have
contributed the least to its upkeep.
F) RESPECT FOR CONFIDENTIALITY
- We will safeguard and make responsible use of the information about our organisation.
- We will exercise due care in all matters of official business, and not divulge any
confidential information about beneficiaries, colleagues and other work-related matters. - We will exercise necessary caution and discretion with regard to political or security
matters in official or private communications including telephone calls, radio messages,
e-mails, social media and letters. - We will ensure, when engaged in communication activities, that portrayal of individuals
and their circumstances are fairly represented in terms of their capacities and
vulnerabilities. - We will not issue statements to the press or other agencies of public information or
submit articles, books or other material for publication, including on internet blogs,
websites, online media, social media and any public electronic forums, if such acts relate
to our activities or interests without the prior approval of organisation’s EXCO. - We are committed to a responsible management of any personal social media
platform, including Facebook and Twitter in accordance with the law and the standards
listed in the present Code of conduct, on which we will not disclose any confidential
professional matters nor divulge any confidential information about beneficiaries and
persons concerned.
G) RESPECT FOR COMMITMENT
- We will report through appropriate channels any matter which appears to break the
standards contained in this Code of Conduct. - We are aware of the fact that any breach of this Code of Conduct may lead to
disciplinary action, dismissal or even legal action, and that false accusations are seen as a
breach of this Code of Conduct, and will be subject to disciplinary action.
ANTI-FRAUD, BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION POLICY
In keeping with Article 9/3 of the Constitution of Love In Action (LIA), this anti-fraud,
bribery and corruption policy is binding on all our members.
A) TRANSPARENCY
- As members of LIA, we will steer clear from favouritism, nepotism and the practice of
giving unfair treatment to one person or group at the expense of another. - We will avoid the misappropriation of funds and the theft of resources like money,
supplies and goods destined for beneficiaries. - We will not get involved in the embezzlement of our organisation’s funds.
- We will avoid giving or receiving money, property or favours from public or private
persons. - We will not give consent to sub-standard, used, or counterfeit products or materials in
place of those specified in the contract or purchase order.
B) ACCOUNTABILITY
- We will abide by all the core values and policies put in place, appropriate controls,
accounting controls, and ensure that such controls are working in a way that empowers
field staff to make good judgements. This also means providing the staff with the training,
identifying risk factors throughout the project or programme cycle and throughout the
supply chain, recognizing their likelihood, understanding the consequences, and setting
up appropriate countermeasures, making sure that the field staff maintains a respectful
dialogue with beneficiaries and any other stakeholders. - We will support and encourage accountability to beneficiaries as an effective way of
reducing the risk of corruption. - We will support and encourage the setting up of training for managers and staff most
exposed to the risks of fraud and corruption, and the implementation of evaluation
procedures by conducting due diligence with regard to our organisation’s anti-corruption
and anti-fraud commitments.
C) DISCIPLININE AND SANCTIONS
- The Investigation Unit of our organisation shall be responsible for investigating all
corruption and fraud issues. - All cases of indiscipline shall be subject to sanctions.
- Our organisation shall keep records of any alleged case of indiscipline for future
reference.
ANTI-TERRORISM AND ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING POLICY
Mindful of Article 9/3 of the Constitution of Love In Action (LIA), this anti-terrorism and
anti-money laundering policy is binding on all our members. This policy also applies to all
our partner organisations, to their board members, staff, volunteers and interns, to their
service providers, contractors and subcontractors.
A) NON-INVOLVEMENT IN TERRORISM ACTIVITIES
- We denounce all forms of terrorism, and will never knowingly support, tolerate or
encourage terrorism or the activities of those who finance terrorism or use it for their
personal interests or benefits. - In accordance with United Nations Security Council’s resolutions S/RES/1269 (1999),
S/RES/1368 (2001) and S/RES/1373 (2001) and the international instruments relating to
the fight against terrorism, our organisation is firmly committed to the international fight
against terrorism, and in particular against the financing of terrorism and any of its related
activities. - We will be very vigilant not to be victimised by cover operations sponsored by terrorist
groups locally and internationally. - In case we notice signs of such practices in any organisations or groups, we will not
partner with them.
B) NON-INVOLVEMENT IN MONEY LAUNDERING
- We will steer clear from the laundering of funds disbursed to our organisation to help
beneficiaries. - We will ensure that none of our organisation’s funds and those of its donors are
laundered. - We will be committed to respect the highest standards in terms of efficiency,
responsibility and financial transparency in all our activities. - In this regard, we will encourage prevention, promote detection, set out clear
investigation procedures and sanction mechanisms.
CHILD PROTECTION POLICY
Conscious of Article 9/3 of the Constitution of Love In Action (LIA), this child protection
policy is binding on all our members.
- We will demonstrate our commitment to protect children within the framework of our
internal procedures and overall external coordination, and in particular for the
implementation of child protection programmes. - We will cooperate with other organisations like UNICEF to protect children’s rights.
- We will promote the maximum protection of children against all forms of
maltreatment, negligence and illiteracy. - We will refrain from child trafficking, and condemn this diabolic practice in the
strongest terms. - We will shun child labour and all forms of child exploitation in conjunction with national
and international laws based on the principles of the 1989 United Nations Convention on
the Rights of the Child and the 1948 United Nations Declaration of Human Rights on the
following basis:
▪ Non-discrimination.
▪ Freedom of expression.
▪ Respect for children’s views on issues of their interest.
▪ Child participation. - We will be advocators of non-violence against the child.
- Our staff directly involved in child-related activities will receive additional technical and
specialized training, and will develop their skills on child protection policies, prevention
and response to violence against children. - We will integrate child protection into our programmes.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST PREVENTION POLICY
In concurrence with Article 9/3 of the Constitution of Love In Action (LIA), this conflict of
interest prevention policy is binding on all our members.
A) RETAINING THE INTEGRITY OF OUR ORGANISATION
- Article 14 of our Constitution defines the functions of all our executive members.
- In order to avoid the conflict of interest among our members, we will strictly respect
the functions of our executive members supra. - No project will be carried out without the approval of our EXCO and our General
Assembly. - None of our members will be allowed to use the name and documents of our
organisation in applying for a grant alone, or in bargaining for anything without the
consent of our EXCO and our General Assembly. - Unless our Constitution is amended, we will remain loyal to our constitutional
boundaries.
B) PREVENTING PROFESSIONAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
- None of our members will be allowed to use their professional influence in getting our
organisation involved in illicit contracts without the prior notification of our hierarchy. - None of our members will be allowed to encroach on the duties of the other members.
- Social, economic or educational competition among our members will be strictly
restricted. - Any engagements which do not match with our objectives by virtue of Article 4 of our
Constitution will not be adhered to. - Any attempt by any of our member or members to drag our organisation into such
personal interests will be sanctioned by dismissal.
